This is perhaps one of the greatest jobs out here working with young people." E-News from Camp! ---------------- Nearly 50 adults attended the recent Adult Work Weekend. The weather was chilly but the rain graciously held off until we were done with the outdoor projects on Saturday. Property Manager Rob Johnston was our host and project coordinator as groups of volunteer workers put in the piers at Small Craft, Sailing, Fishing, Swimming, and Water Skiing; stained the exterior of Lakeside; painted walls in the Dining Room and the Trading Post; chipped a few trails; set up the Archery range; installed safety covers on the fluorescent tubes in the Dining Room; and finished the interiors of Kiwanis Lodge, Wally Ford Lodge, and Triangle Lodge. After heading up the assembly of the swimming piers, John Donohue prepared the Sunfish for summer use, and Neil Featherstone used the John Deere riding mower to trim all the grass on the peninsula. So much got done that I'm sure I've forgotten something, and there are too many names to mention. Suffice it to say that we had an All-Star crew for the weekend. After the work was done there was the traditional steak/chicken fry, do-it-yourself sundaes, and evening social event. Our deepest gratitude to all that attended! Peter Frankel has posted some pictures from the weekend on his website click on the "Photos" button. A high-speed (cable or DSL) Internet connection is recommended for the "Slide Show" option; with a dial-up connection you may want to stick with the thumbnail gallery, five pictures at a time. Song of the Week ---------------- M.T.A. (As performed by the Kingston Trio) Lyrics: Jacqueline Steiner/Bess Hawes Well, let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie On a tragic and fateful day. He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family, Went to ride on the M.T.A. (CHORUS) Well, did he ever return? No, he never returned. And his fate is still unlearned. (What a pity) He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston He's the man who never returned. Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square Station And he changed for Jamaica Plain. When he got there the conductor told him "One more nickel." Charlie couldn't get off of that train. (Poor old Charlie) Now, all night long Charlie rides through the station, Crying, "What will become of me? How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea Or my cousin in Rocksbury?" (Shame and scandal) Charlie's wife goes down to the Sculley Square Station Every day at quarter past two And through the open [sandwich] she hands Charlie a [window] As the train comes rumblin' through. (He may ride forever) Now you citizens of Boston don't you think it's a scandal How the people have to pay and pay? Fight the fare increase vote for [CAMP ECHO]! Get poor Charlie off the M.T.A. (Just like Paul Revere) Letters to the Editor --------------------- Dear Editor, [Re: Apr 21] Why is it: 'Skully by gully' if Rich's name is "Skolly"? Just wonderin' Dave Gendel -- Dear Dave, Obviously, it's because "Skolly" does not rhyme with "golly". Also, don't confuse Rich Skolly with the Sculley Square Station in the M.T.A. song; there is no relation there, even though the names sound the same. The Editor Echo History Tidbit of the Week ------------------------------- From the "Camp Echoes" newsletter, June 1980: "Late April brought the first sounds of the 1980 camping season to Camp Echo. After a relatively mild winter birds and water fowl, local deer and wildlife were only temporarily alarmed by the splitter and chain saws of Wood Cutting Weekend. Bill [Geiger], [his wife] Beth, year-round resident Roger Marshall and loyal camp friend Jess Deephouse had the equipment, food, and Ben-Gay ready for eight hearty souls who "had always wanted to be lumberjacks ..." at least until they rolled out of bed Sunday morning. These friends of Echo included: Kent & Sherry Smith; Dave Fowler (a real cut-up); The Fischls, Paul & John; Mary Kleschen (Echo '80 staff); Bruce Carmichael & Terry (soon to be Carmichael) Wermeling." [Editor's Note: Bill Geiger, former Camp Echo Director, was one of our volunteers this past weekend; Tom Fischl and Dave Fowler of O'Fischl Sports in Evanston printed the summer staff T-shirts that were delivered to Echo this past week; and Mary Kelschen, M.D. is slated to be the Camp Echo Health Officer for the first week of Session C, 2002. Many others on that list are still in touch.] Feel The Spirit! -- Rob Grierson Camp Echo Director rg@mcgawymca.org
